"NEWS" from the past two months from Room 309, 314, and 315,
The fourth graders have been working hard all four months of school so far. We are steadily getting to be better readers by reading more Accelerated Reader (AR) Books and testing with computerized tests. Many of the students have already reached the required number of 25 books so far and will have 50 or more read by the end of school in June. Keep up the good work, everyone!
In late December, the fourth graders received beautiful gIft bags from an unknown and generous benefactor. These bags held an assortment of books, candy and cookies, | | We get a visit from a Voyager | toys like balls and yo-yo's, snow globes, scarves, hats, flashlights, etc. The students were thrilled and wrote "Thank You" letters immediately to our mysterious and kind "Secret Santa."
In January, we all went to the University of Minnesota to experience a day on campus. This was part of the South Campus program "Get Ready" and arranged by Mrs. Wall. We had two entertaining lectures in the Physics Building, talked to professors and teaching assistants, visited the Weisman Art Museum, and ate lunch in the Coffman Union cafeteria. Students took home folders and university information encouraging them to consider the University for their college. This trip definitely got a lot of boys and girls looking ahead to the future.
We are now beginning our aviation pioneer reports in writing class. Students will be | | MN history on animal pelts | focused on learning about them by reading biographies of Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, the Wright Brothers, etc. Some classes are creating time lines, reports dealing with childhood, adulthood and major accomplishments of these important Americans. This project is a very big project in grade 4.
Students are preparing for our standardized tests that occur in the next few months by practicing in the computer lab with "Study Island" and with strategy classes on-going throughtout the week. Having more time building test-taking skills will help student understand the test more fully when the actual MCA tests are given. On January 30, an Awards Assembly was held featuring the students that had gained recognition for various achievements with another being held later in Spring. Many students were given pins for perfect attendance, | | Science Literacy activity | reading their 25 books to date, being an exceptional crew member in Flight Site, or by outstanding behaviors and work qualities.
Dr. Vincent and Mr. Cloman spoke and gave a message of hope, encouragement, and high expectations. Our next Award Assembly will feature even more students as their teachers note consistent achievement, attitudes and effort over the months.
Parents, please check our web-site regularly for information and up-dates with regard to the events at our school, Farnsworth Aerospace North Campus.
Best wishes,
